Do You Need Glasses?
I’ve worn glasses for many years, but I will never forget when I first learned I needed them. I was 21 and at the DMV to renew my driver’s license. When I leaned in to the eye exam machine, I told the lady she could turn it on, that I was ready. She said, “Ma’am, it IS on.” Of course, back then, I’m sure I had a few choice words since she would not renew my license until I went and got my eyes examined, which resulted in my first pair of glasses.
After getting my glasses, I could not believe how blind I had become…not literally, but you don’t really realize your sight going bad since it is a gradual decline. On the way home after being fitted with my new “eyes,” I would tip them down to look over the top of them, comparing my vision with the glasses and without. I was just so amazed at the clarity with which I could now see.
As infants we are born into sin; we learn quiet early how to manipulate, and as we continue to grow, we take on more sin of our own choices. It’s a gradual build up and we think we’re “good” people. But when we accept Jesus into our hearts, it’s like putting on those glasses for the first time. We’re shocked to find out how blind we really were to all the things we were doing wrong, things that were displeasing to the Father.
You may be tempted to tilt your newfound righteousness down to look back at your old life, but once you’ve experienced the new clarity with which you see, you’ll soon realize you don’t want to go back to life without glasses.
