Freedom In Surrender

Casting Crowns has a song, “Just Be Held,” in which there’s a line “there’s freedom in surrender.” That got me to thinking…usually when we hear the word “surrender” it has something negative attached. For instance, criminals surrender because they’ve been caught, or maybe a team surrenders a game due to player injuries. Either way, control is removed and loss takes its place, in these scenarios, loss of rights or loss of a potential victory.

But when I look at the word “surrender” in God’s light, I start to see something totally different. In this song, they sing about being in a desperate situation and that there is freedom in surrender. Surrender doesn’t mean giving up, it just means looking up. Sometimes the only thing left for us to do is lay everything at His feet and wait graciously for His answer. There is peace when we place our burdens on Him…and don’t be afraid to do it...He asks us to in His word. Surrender is not always about loss. Sometimes, and hopefully more often than not, it’s about life.
