Have You Heard?
I heard someone say recently, “Pay attention to your premonitions, they’re alerting you to something.” That may be true to a person who’s been serving the Lord their whole lives, but to a baby believer, that could be a dangerous directive. I’ve had cancer twice, so my radar is always up, but before I got a little bible under my belt, I can assure you that if I had dream or an idea that my cancer had returned, I would have been on the computer, finding an internet doctor to confirm my worst suspicions.
You’ll hear people say all the time, “listen for God’s voice,” but if you’ve never heard it, how do you know what to listen for? As a mother, I could always pick out my kids’ voices in a crowd, as could they hear mine. Why? Because we had relationship, a connection and we’d known each other a long time. It’s the same with our heavenly Father. The more you get to know Him, the deeper your relationship will grow, and you’ll be able to pick out His voice when there are a lot of invading voices all around. He may speak to you through a sermon, a song, or through something you read. Don’t put God in a box and expect Him to communicate with you in a way that you designed. Remember…He spoke to Moses through a burning bush!
Once you’ve established communication with God, you can also ask for His discernment; wisdom beyond your knowledge that will guide your steps and decisions, helping you to make right choices with ease and confidence. Even then, though, we are all still human and we’re going to mess up, so don’t beat yourself up when you were certain you heard from God but you still ended up on the wrong path. We serve a forgiving God…a God of second…and third…and fourth chances.
Maybe God speaks to you through your dreams…this is where the premonition statement might ring true. However He speaks to you, hearing from the Lord takes practice and time. The ball is in your court and He’s waiting to hear from His favorite kid!
