The Present

When something really good happens to us, we can’t wait to share the news with everyone. So why are we so hesitant to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with unbelievers? Fear of rejection? Afraid to sound too preachy or holier-than-thou? Maybe you think someone else is more qualified or that all those around you are already believers. Whatever your reason, the good news about sharing the Good News is that this time of year opens the door for you, giving you an easier approach. The Christmas season tends to make everyone a little more open to hearing stories about Jesus, prayerfully people are nicer to one another, and peeking around the corner is the new year when people are eager for a fresh start. What better time to engage them in some conversation that might change not just the approaching new year, but all their years to come.

When we struggle with sharing the Gospel with others, we only need to look to Jesus’ example, because He was the Master when it came to capturing the attention of those around Him. He didn’t reach them with fire and brimstone, He met them where they were and became relatable to them. He spoke to the people in ways they could understand, not with confusing or demeaning rhetoric.

The easiest way for people to WANT to hear what you have to say is to be humble about what you’re about to share. Theodor Roosevelt said, “Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Explain that Jesus is the real gift of Christmas. Share verse John 3:16 with them, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Romans 6:23 says that the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Next, let people SEE what you want them to hear. The old adage, “actions speak louder than words,” was never more true than when we’re trying to lead others to Jesus. Francis of Assisi reads, “Preach the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words.” People are always watching you and what you do speaks of what’s in your heart. If you’re doing it right, people will be drawn to you, as they were with Jesus, and they’ll want to know more.

Make it personal. Tell people your testimony of how God rescued you and how He has blessed you. I’m more intrigued by someone’s true struggles and hearing how they overcame them than I am with listening to someone just quote scripture. When people see that you’re real…that being a believer comes with its own battles, but you’re still pressing on with a smile on your face…THAT’s what will speak volumes to them.

While giving and receiving gifts is fun, the bible tells us that the earthly gifts we enjoy around December 25th will rot or rust and invite thieves to steal our stuff. Instead, Matthew 6:20:21 says to store up…The Message says ‘stockpile’…your treasures in heaven, because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. This means that we shouldn’t put so much emphasis on what we have here, but that we are doing things here that will matter in heaven. Tell people there’s so much more to this life…that Jesus…THE ULTIMATE GIFT…is for you and for me and that He is the perfect gift for today…that’s why it’s called the present.
