What’s Your Kryptonite?

Superheroes have been around for almost a century, debuting in comic strips in the late 1930’s. Some were made into cartoons, then into big screen movies. Each hero has their own unique power, usually a super-human act of good will to save the day. Superman is “Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.” Batman doesn’t really have any “super” powers, but he uses his intellect, physical agility and invincible will to conquer the evil in the world. Even though they each overcome adversity in a different way, they have something in common…they each have a weakness. Superman’s is kryptonite and Batman’s is The Joker.

As believers, we may not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but we do have powers inside of us that can defeat the evil in the world. When we’re born again, accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we’re given the gift of the Holy Spirit, a mighty force of power who dwells in us to help us navigate through life. Remember in the Batman cartoons how The Joker would taunt Batman and sometimes even have him bound up and you were just sure it was the end of Batman as we knew him. But he always figured his way out, using his strength and his intellect, and of course a little help from Robin. Make no mistake, there’s a joker in our lives too and he knows your kryptonite. Whatever your weakness, that’s where Satan will try to ensnare you into his net. But we have to empower the Holy Spirit within us, utilizing all the imparted wisdom and all the strength we’ve gained as believers of Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Not just any someone…the weakest someone…exposed, easy prey. Satan feeds on our vulnerabilities; stay alert, don’t be his next meal.
