Don’t Be a Helicopter Believer

As a mom of two grown children, I will often witness moms with younger children struggling with fussy toddlers or defiant teens. In hindsight, I can see that all of those moments were necessary learning curves and that my kids and I would turn out just fine. But in those moments, there are times you want to quit, throw in the towel, or go on strike because it’s just all too overwhelming. You throw your fists in the air and scream, “God, I can’t do this ANYMORE!!!” And in that moment, I think a hush falls over heaven and God replies, “Finally, now I can get to work.”

Too often we get caught up in our day to day and we forget to lay our concerns at the feet of Jesus; and if we do, we tend to hover over them, or take them back, because we need results and we think we are better equipped to make that happen. We say on Sunday that we trust in the Lord, but on Monday, we’re back to our hover and recover routine, trying to make sense of our situation.

Psalm 55:22 “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you.” Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” I can’t find any verse in the bible that says “Come back in 2 hours if your needs have not been met,” or “you go your way, and I’ll go Mine, sayeth the Lord.” When we lay our burdens down, we should be going into trust mode. We are leaving it up to God how to handle it because it’s too much for us to do on our own. When we come to Him, both of these verses say He’ll take care of us…He’ll sustain us and He’ll give us rest. When I read scriptures like these, I find myself saying the last parts with a gentle sigh of relief…I mean, try to quote it angrily…you can’t. It’s like an ahhhh moment. It’s comforting and peaceful to know that God is ready and able to take on what burdens me…as soon as I let it go.
