What’s It Gonna Be? Light or Lies?

Many years ago, when my daughter was in middle school, her school did an annual fall festival and the biggest “attraction” was the haunted house. I was there for several days prior to the event, helping to transform their portable building into a maze of scary fun. Of course, when we were working on it, all the lights were on and I could see all the props and I knew where all the “scream factors” were; but once the decorating was done, we turned off all the lights and went through the building and it was actually pretty frightening!

This is not about whether or not you participate in Halloween, this is just about what I discovered throughout the process. I was kind of perplexed as to why I found myself getting scared when I knew what was about to happen, but there’s just something about the darkness that ups the fear factor.

As believers, surely we have more good days than bad; we walk in the Light of truth, we observe God around us and in us. But as Pastor has taught us, even the best of us has our dark days and if we’re not careful, we can lose sight of the Light and get trapped in the dark. Satan resides in the darkness because he can’t risk being exposed in the Light. He will try to trick you, confuse you and scare you, even though you know the things he’s telling you aren’t true…because you’ve been in the Light.

It's written in my bible now, “never doubt in the dark what God has shown you in the light.” The root meaning of the word doubt is looking both ways at once. Seems physically impossible, but spiritually, we allow ourselves to doubt when we take our eyes off Jesus.  Only by hearing and reading of the Word can we fortify ourselves to survive the night…the darkness that looms and is waiting hungrily to devour us at the slightest glimpse of uncertainty. Something I read while writing this said, “It’s better to walk in the dark with God than to go it alone in the light.” The bible tells in Matthew 28:20 that God is with us ALWAYS, even to the end of the age. So, if your days seem haunted and you’re walking through a maze of darkness, reach out for His hand and let Him lead you back to the Light.
