Lifter of My Head

Luke 13:11-13 “A woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.”

I am saddened when I am in public and see an elderly person who is all hunched over, whether if was from years of poor posture or a debilitating, age-related reason. I wonder if they are in pain or if they’ve just come to be content with their circumstance. Being hunched over means that you’re not engaging in eye contact with others and to do so requires a deliberate act of motion to lift your head. The scripture above says Jesus called for the woman to come forward. If she was bent over, she obviously didn’t see Him, but something in her spirit must have whispered to her, “go ahead, Daughter, it’s all going to be okay.”

Psalm 3:3 says, “But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.” In our day to day, we may not be physically bent or hunched over, but the weight of our sin…our guilt, our shame, our regrets…can cause us to be downcast, to be weary and continuously troubled. That is not how God wants His children to be. He wants to call you forward, like He did the woman in Luke, and heal you of your infirmity, so that you may walk with your head up, for all to see the light of Jesus within you.

Would you allow God to be the lifter of your head? Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Listen for the Spirit to whisper to you that everything’s going to be okay. Only when we’re looking up can we truly glorify Him.
