Squirrel!!
Have you seen the old Geico commercial where the squirrels are deliberately trying to cause car accidents by darting across the road, and we know this because they’re seen high-fiving each other after you hear the car crash! It’s so funny, but it’s also so true.
My husband has ALWAYS told me, “Do NOT swerve to miss a squirrel, or any other small animal,” like a raccoon or opossum. He said it’s just not worth it. Living in a very wooded subdivision, I’ve had to put that to the test more times than I can count. Those pesky squirrels must have more lives than a cat, because they dart back and forth across the road and even though you don’t want to, you just know you’re going to hit them, but you look in the rearview mirror and there’s no squirrel lying dead in the road.
We are kind of like those squirrels, flirting with sin and testing fate, as if there’s no consequence. What you don’t realize is Satan is the driver and he sees your erratic behavior, a perfect candidate for his world. He’s coming for you and right at the last second, you dart back across to the other side. He looks in his rearview mirror, dumbfounded, “Where did he go, I know I got him?” But God! 2 Timothy 2:26 says, “and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil.”
Unlike a cat with nine lives, we have but one life to live and if we’re to make it to heaven, we have to come to our senses and stop darting between sin and sanctity. It’s just not worth it.
