The Weight of the Word
When I like a movie, I can watch it hundreds of times and never get bored with it. One of those is “American President,” where Annette Bening plays a political activist, fighting for the reduction of fossil fuels, and Michael Douglas plays the President. In one scene, she is stating her case with passion and conviction, asking the President to support a bill for a 20% reduction of fossil fuels. He tells her that it would never pass at 20%, that it would be hard to pass at 10%. Her response to him was, “How do you know until you put the full weight of the presidency behind it?”
In our own church, I’ve witnessed times when someone on their own tries to accomplish something worthy of doing, but there’s not a lot of steam to keep the engine moving, so to speak. But, when Pastor asks for something from the pulpit, encourages us to support something, more often than not, there is a great response.
Why is that? Because people of power and/or authority have a platform and a voice, they have followers who trust and respect them, which means they are more open to do what’s being asked of them. God is the ultimate power and authority; as followers of Jesus Christ, we are more likely to go where He leads us, or accept His Word as truth. The bible tells us in Eph. 1:18-22 that the same power that rose Jesus from the dead is the same power God put in us when we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. What if we put that power behind our voice and our actions? How much louder would our words be to reach others? How much bolder would our actions be to attract others? How will you ever know until you put the full weight of the Word behind them?
