Thy Will Be Done

Do you remember this conversation when you were a kid? “Mom, can I have ice cream?” “No.” “Why not?” you asked, and she said, “Because I said so.” Oh, maybe there was a reason and maybe there wasn’t, but when Mom got tired of answering questions, she’d blurt out, “Because I said so,” and that really ought to have been reason enough.

There are times in life when we really struggle with where we’re at and what we’re going through. Sometimes we are certain we are heading down the right path but then stumble into a brick wall. Maybe we’ve prayed for something, but God’s answer is not what we wanted. We might cry out to Him and say, “Why God, why haven’t You done as I asked?” and God’s answer is sometimes, “Because I said so,” and that really should be enough. Nowhere in the bible does it say that He’s obligated to explain Himself or His actions to us. At these times, we’d all do well to remember these four words…thy will be done.

Hillary Scott has a song titled “Thy Will Be Done” and in the bridge of the song it says, “I know You see me, I know You hear me, Lord. Your plans are for me, goodness You have in store.” God knows your pain, He’s aware of your needs, but He works in His time and in His way; something we may never understand this side of Heaven. Jesus was the perfect example when, in the hours leading to His crucifixion, He asked for His Father to take the cup from Him, to change history, to spare Him a horrible death. Then He spoke these four words…Thy will be done. He made His requests known to God, but then gave full control back to the Father, whose ways are always better than our own, even if we can’t see it in the moment. Our lesson learned can be summed up in what I believe to be the best line in the song, “Sometimes I gotta stop, remember that You’re God, and I…am…not.”
