Avoiding Distrac….SQUIRREL!!
We joke about how easily dogs get distracted. You could be walking with them and sometimes, despite their training, when they see a cat, another dog, or maybe even a bird, they lunge or bolt towards that which distracted them. We call this action “Squirrel,” in our own lives, likening how easily we are distracted from an activity, just like a dog.
I’ve sat in on plenty of bible studies to know that this is not just a problem I struggle with. Distraction during prayer time is very common, and you should not beat yourself up over it. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to improve…after all, that’s the least we can do for the Father who allowed you to wake up today.
Distractions will never go away, so we must remover ourselves from the distractions. I’m not suggesting you leave young children to fend for themselves while you hide in a closet; but, prioritizing quiet time with God is a choice we have to make when the chaos swirls around us like a tornado. Don’t work God into your schedule, instead, plan your schedule around God.
With the blink of an eye, God COULD remove all our distractions, but just like any other struggle, I think this is an area that God grows us as we learn to cancel out the noise of the world in an effort to hear Him more clearly.
