I Give You My Word

Long ago, during a time when most of us weren’t even born, a person’s word was worth something. Back in the day, a good handshake was the seal of a mutual agreement, a physical affirmation that two parties had verbally discussed a deal. A man’s word could promote him if he kept it or condemn him if he didn’t. We don’t hear it much anymore, but people used to say, “I give you my word.” Maybe they don’t say it because they can’t be honest, they know they can’t live up to an agreement, or they simply don’t care. But doing what you say you’ll do is a sign of integrity, it shows you are faithful to your word.

When this idea came to me, I thought first of the Word of God. Then, thinking of the phrase “I give you my word,” I thought of how it applied to God in two ways. First, if God were to look down on us and say, “I give you My word,” we could find peace in knowing that He is faithful to His Word; if He said, He means it. Numbers 23:19 “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not fulfill it?” Digging into this verse, I found Psalm 18:30 “This God—His way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true.” And looking at scriptures to prove that God is unchanging, there are so many…Hebrews 13:8 says He’s the same yesterday, today and forever, James 1:17 says with God, there is no variation or shadow due to change. Bottom line…God’s Word is good and He’s good to His Word.

The second way I think “I give you my word” applies to God is that He physically “gave us His Word” when He sent us His Son. John 1:14 says “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” As I studied this verse, I came across something Pastor has taught us before; the term ‘word’ has two Greek translations, Rhema, which is typically used to describe a spoken word, and Logos, which is used to reference God’s message to mankind. In this verse, John is speaking of Jesus; Jesus is the Word, a total Message for us…yesterday, today and forever…for a thousand generations. Jesus embodies the very essence of God, everything the Father wanted us to know about Him. And because the Word became flesh, He knows our weaknesses and can sympathize because He too was tempted, but unlike us, He was without sin. (Hebrews 4:15)

I give you my word that if you ever doubt God, dig into His Word and you too will find that His promises are for everyone, they are true and they are irrevocable. He gave you His Word.
