Just Because You Can, Doesn’t Mean You Should
I think it’s funny…and wise…that Dennis understands that there is a time and a place for “exhibition of speed.” When we’re out in the Camaro, he will sometimes get a little squirrely, or mash the gas, but for the most part, especially in our subdivision, he drives really reserved, knowing there just aren’t that many bright yellow ’69 Camaros with Holy Wild hockey stripes. “No officer, that wasn’t me.” Right…
One day, while on the freeway, and driving the speed limit, a Prius drove past us. He looked over at me and said, “It’s pretty bad when you’re passed by a Prius.” I reminded him that just because he COULD smoke the little car out of the water doesn’t mean he should. We both laughed and went about our journey.
Pastor once told us that when he started preaching in Crosby, he quickly realized that a suit and tie attire would not be appropriate for this area. He decided boots and jeans would attract more people in our little country town; and he was right. Meet the people where they are. Just because you CAN wear a suit and tie, doesn’t mean you should.
This lesson applies to scripture too, in my opinion. It is good to know scripture, it is a very valuable tool in your daily arsenal to fight the enemy; however, you can really alienate an unbeliever if all you do is quote scripture after scripture. Those who are on the outside looking in don’t want to hear all your memorized verses, they want to see if you’re living the Book. Use discernment when quoting God’s word…there is a time and a place. Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should.
